ChristmasTree Worm

Christmas Tree Worm
Spirobranchus spinosus

The branchial plumes of a Christmas Tree Worm
extend from its burrow to gather
oxygen from the surrounding waters.

These small worms are very sensitive to movement,
and will pull their plumes back into their burrows
at the slightest hint of danger.

They can be found with their tubes attached to rocks,
in depths up to 40 feet, from Central California to Baja.
